Google’s Honeycomb Could Bring Us 3D Holographic Web Meetings in the Future

Star Wars Princess Leia HologramAndroid 3.0, otherwise known as Honeycomb, is the next version of the Android platform from Google which is designed especially for devices that have larger screens like tablets. A new virtual and holographic user interface comprises the new platform that allows for activities such as Web meetings.

The current features of the Android platform will be enhanced with Honeycomb. Elegant notifications, multi-tasking, access to more than 100,000 apps on the Android marketplace, customization of the home screen with a new 3D experience and redesigned widgets will all be more interactive with Honeycomb according to company sources.

Company sources also added that Honeycomb will feature Google Mobile innovations including Google Maps 5 with 3D interactions as well as offline reliability in addition to allowing access to more than 3 million Google eBooks.

Jeff Orr, a principal analyst at ABI Research, commented on the vector format used in Google Maps 5 as opposed to titles saying, “Where you may have had only top-down displays of roads and local features and landmarks, you can now see the elevations of buildings and wireframe drawings.”

Another new feature, Google Talk, will allow you to conduct video and voice chat for Web meetings with any Google Talk enabled device including PCs and tablets. Another thing that is poised to quickly become a reality is communicating with 3D holograms in real time during Web meetings. According to officials from IBM, “improvements in 3D technology and holographic cameras and their miniaturization to fit into cell phones will help achieve this maybe in the next five years.”

This technology is already available though it is still very primitive. True holographic communications and Web meetings will be possible only when all associated problems have been dealt with first. Ways to minimize power usage and increase compute power in a device have to be created first. A very small pico projector will be needed in addition to finding ways to incorporate it into a hand-held device that actually works.

Texas Instruments is making a few advancements in the field of pico projectors and Qualcomm is currently working on augmented reality as well as 3D in a small compute flow factor. The company has also joined up with the Georgia Institute of Technology in order to put a research and development center known as Qualcomm Augmented Reality Game Studio in place.

Power Point Projectors
Are Great for Business Meetings

Most business class projectors will do a good job displaying your PowerPoint presentation. If you have a small presentation group, a 2000 lumen LCD projector will be able to produce a nice and clear picture. For larger audiences you should consider a 5000 lumen LCD projector.
